To DIYers everywhere, HGTV is synonymous with home design inspiration and how-to expertise. The Scripps Networks brand had an enormous collection of images they knew their viewers would love to explore at their leisure. And they were looking for a new way to promote their retail partners.
So Scripps turned to Hanson to design the HGTV Folio App, an iPad application that lets homeowners browse thousands of photos, add notes, save favorites, and share with friends. A style finder quiz uses visual prompts to guide budding decorators. And hotspots on the images call out paint colors and other partner products, making it easier to get the look at home.
But just as inspiring as the design galleries is the technical infrastructure behind the app. Hanson used Amazon Web Services to build a powerful administrative interface and web service to drive the application. HGTV staff can manage images from a wide variety of content management sources, applying custom hotspots and metadata as they go.
The HGTV Folio App is available in the Apple App Store, where it was downloaded 40,000 times in the first two weeks and featured as “New and Noteworthy.”
